An update on Steampunk:
We (a group of my local costuming friends who are going to D*C) are getting up in Steampunk gear on Friday, if anyone else would like to join the theme, by all means! If the amount of traffic in LJ communities like
steamfashion is any indication, the Steampunk will soon rival Pirates in numbers and enthusiasm.
What is Steampunk? Better philosophers than I have wrestled with that question, but here's my take. Steampunk isn't a rigidly defined thing - it's sort of Victorian, draws on early fantasy/SF literature like Jules Verne, is kind of industrial and sort of gothic, and involves polite but eccentric behaviour. Most people wear big vintage goggles and use lots of brass and have gadgets made of clockwork. It's called 'steam' because the technology would have run on steampower, but the tech is often way beyond what was actually available to Victorians.
Zeppelins, submarines, goggles, gears, top hats and derbys, corsets, ray guns...
While compiling the lists of things needed for the expedition to the Lost City of Atlanta, I thought of something fun:
Captain Baron von Haggis, PhD - aka
drhaggis:

Lady Mildred Henrietta Fulton of Beechworth. First Mate and Botanist; a Scientist - aka
veritate:

A Welder and Woman of Industry - aka sith@heart:

A Doctor of Physick - aka Dr. Smith:

Lady Jenny Faraway, Weapons Specialist and Slayer of Eldritch Entities- aka me:

A Mechanical Woman - aka my little sister:

Sir William, Phrenologist - aka my friend Bill:
*drum roll*....

LOL - poor Bill. At least I decided he's not a Red Shirt.
PS - if you crewmembers come up with titles and character names other than these, tell me :-)
PPS - Long live the Queen!

You have my undying love.

God Save the Queen...
*bounce!* *bounce!* *bounce!*
Fingers are crossed that you have time to finish it today!
Had I known I was to be the swaggering, overbearing, tin-plated dictator with delusions of godhood, I would have actually tin-plated myself.
I was shooting more for a Firefly model for back-story purposes, but this works really well.
Smith's stethoscope is coming along nicely, and I will send pictures soon. I still need parts for your blunderbassoon.

So excited to see the devices! Thank you again!
LOL! I love it. It will always be a blunderbassoon from now on!
That is all.
I wonder if Bill would go for a low-cut version of his Phrenologist costume... :-)
I just googled Party Hard Corps... sounds like a fun group to be in bondage too. :-)
Now I get why you asked where I got my quidditch goggles. :)
Those are mighty cool goggles of yours. In the end, I'm actually going with antique specs and Raj's costume doesn't really go with goggles, though if he takes his headgear off, he might wear our spare pair of motorcycle goggles.
I will post some pics before we leave, I think.
And where did jkg_vader get hers???
My pirate might fit in... maybe?
... Goggles and clocks... hmmm...
I do have a gold watch...
Sounds fun. :D
Thanks for letting me know what it's about; I was intending to go back to your previous post and reply to your comment, but saw this, first...
Is this a daytime or nighttime thing?
Thanks for explaining!

We've gotten goggles from ebay (antique safety goggles are very cool) as well as local vintage/antique places. They tend to be in stores that sell 'stuff' rather than clothing. The aviator goggles I wore at Prophecy are vintage motorcycle goggles that my brother-in-law just happened to have.
I'll try to get some photos up of us before we leave.
You're welcome :-)
That is awesome. I'm vibrating with excitement! Only a week and a half! I have to go sew...

Clara Clayton was into Astronomy and all that sort.. and you guys don't have a Navigator perse.. I could see doing some kind of Mystic Navigator... the kids.. Jules and Verne.. and Jason.. something.. not sure yet.. he's thinking Pilot, or Indy type Character.. Just came to me.. some kind of Game Hunter maybe.. I don't know.. but I really want to create this.. If I did it right.. I would totally enter it into the Competition next year.. and I would love to draw on your guys experience and knowledge to make it happen..
Well done!
I hope we inspire rather than discourage! What I love about Steampunk is that it is about creativity and originality - there is plenty of room for other automatons! :-)
