An update on Steampunk:

We (a group of my local costuming friends who are going to D*C) are getting up in Steampunk gear on Friday, if anyone else would like to join the theme, by all means! If the amount of traffic in LJ communities like [info]steamfashion is any indication, the Steampunk will soon rival Pirates in numbers and enthusiasm.

What is Steampunk? Better philosophers than I have wrestled with that question, but here's my take. Steampunk isn't a rigidly defined thing - it's sort of Victorian, draws on early fantasy/SF literature like Jules Verne, is kind of industrial and sort of gothic, and involves polite but eccentric behaviour. Most people wear big vintage goggles and use lots of brass and have gadgets made of clockwork. It's called 'steam' because the technology would have run on steampower, but the tech is often way beyond what was actually available to Victorians.

Zeppelins, submarines, goggles, gears, top hats and derbys, corsets, ray guns...

While compiling the lists of things needed for the expedition to the Lost City of Atlanta, I thought of something fun:

Captain Baron von Haggis, PhD - aka [info]drhaggis:

Lady Mildred Henrietta Fulton of Beechworth. First Mate and Botanist; a Scientist - aka [info]veritate:

A Welder and Woman of Industry - aka sith@heart:

A Doctor of Physick - aka Dr. Smith:

Lady Jenny Faraway, Weapons Specialist and Slayer of Eldritch Entities- aka me:

A Mechanical Woman - aka my little sister:

Sir William, Phrenologist - aka my friend Bill:
*drum roll*....

LOL - poor Bill. At least I decided he's not a Red Shirt.

PS - if you crewmembers come up with titles and character names other than these, tell me :-)

PPS - Long live the Queen!

Oh, Drat!
Shame on you, Lady Faraway - I sit here at my place of employment, welling up in tears at the aptness of your assignments.

You have my undying love.

Re: Oh, Drat!
*hugs* I love that something I just thought was sorta fun touched off a tear-welling! :-)

your corset should be going out from the local Posting Office tomorrow afternoon, if I can but finish the binding and grommets this evening!

God Save the Queen...

*SQUEE!!!*

*bounce!* *bounce!* *bounce!*

Fingers are crossed that you have time to finish it today!

I must say, I'm unexpectedly attracted to steampunkery. There's just something about its combination of old and new that appeals to me in a way that other SciFi stylings don't. I look forward to reading about your D*C adventures!

Yes - I think that's part of the appeal for me too. I love all kinds of 'old-fashioned' futures!

..Long may the Queen reign.

Had I known I was to be the swaggering, overbearing, tin-plated dictator with delusions of godhood, I would have actually tin-plated myself.

I was shooting more for a Firefly model for back-story purposes, but this works really well.

Smith's stethoscope is coming along nicely, and I will send pictures soon. I still need parts for your blunderbassoon.

I tried it with the crew of Serenity but after you=Mal, Dr Smith=Simon, and Me=Jane, the metaphor started to stretch.

So excited to see the devices! Thank you again!

Oh - and blunderbassoon?!?

LOL! I love it. It will always be a blunderbassoon from now on!

I feel compelled to point out if Deanna Troi were ever actually present on Kirk's Enterprise, they could shut down the dilithium crystals and power the ship solely off the reaction in the Captain's Trousers.

That is all.

Love those lowcut "ship's counsellor" uniforms. "I'll hop on your couch anytime, Ms. Troi."

Indeed!

I wonder if Bill would go for a low-cut version of his Phrenologist costume... :-)

Oh drat! I'm so far behind on Dcon costuming, there's no way I'll be able to come up with anything steampunky (besides which I think I'm in bondage to the Party Hard Corps all weekend, so it's military gear for me). But can I come and bask in your glory at some point?

Yay! I would love to see you at D*C!

I just googled Party Hard Corps... sounds like a fun group to be in bondage too. :-)

you are hilarious. And Ron and I will most definitely be involved in the SteamPunk at Dragon*Con '08. :)

Now I get why you asked where I got my quidditch goggles. :)

'08 is going to be a banner D*C year!

Those are mighty cool goggles of yours. In the end, I'm actually going with antique specs and Raj's costume doesn't really go with goggles, though if he takes his headgear off, he might wear our spare pair of motorcycle goggles.

I will post some pics before we leave, I think.

Hmmm... Where Did you get the goggles, dear? ;p
And where did jkg_vader get hers???
My pirate might fit in... maybe?
... Goggles and clocks... hmmm...
I do have a gold watch...
Sounds fun. :D

Thanks for letting me know what it's about; I was intending to go back to your previous post and reply to your comment, but saw this, first...

Is this a daytime or nighttime thing?
Thanks for explaining!

I think mostly evening and later, though I might wear mine during the day too - it's fairly comfortable and I have a spare shirt.

We've gotten goggles from ebay (antique safety goggles are very cool) as well as local vintage/antique places. They tend to be in stores that sell 'stuff' rather than clothing. The aviator goggles I wore at Prophecy are vintage motorcycle goggles that my brother-in-law just happened to have.

I'll try to get some photos up of us before we leave.

You're welcome :-)

I wonder how Brent Spiner will feel about being the model for The Mechanical Woman?

That is awesome. I'm vibrating with excitement! Only a week and a half! I have to go sew...

We'll just have to go ask him! :-) It would be sorta cool to get a picture of you in costume with him, if the timing works.

I came to a cool idea... while going upstairs last night.. in making us a Steampunk Family... well.. Back to the Future III hit me.. we could do something similar to that..

Clara Clayton was into Astronomy and all that sort.. and you guys don't have a Navigator perse.. I could see doing some kind of Mystic Navigator... the kids.. Jules and Verne.. and Jason.. something.. not sure yet.. he's thinking Pilot, or Indy type Character.. Just came to me.. some kind of Game Hunter maybe.. I don't know.. but I really want to create this.. If I did it right.. I would totally enter it into the Competition next year.. and I would love to draw on your guys experience and knowledge to make it happen..

You guys were brilliant at the Con, particularly your mechanical lady. I had grand plans of doing a sort of steampunk wind-up doll next year, but having seen it done so well already, I'm either abandoning the idea or going back to the drawing board for a lot more engineering. :)

Well done!

Thank you so much :-)

I hope we inspire rather than discourage! What I love about Steampunk is that it is about creativity and originality - there is plenty of room for other automatons! :-)
